Staff Profiles

Carl Hiehn (Senior Editor) is the only member of Ruckus Magazine who has not completed his undergrad. Despite this minor blemish, he is confident that his experience as the features editor at Excalibur and his short time as an editorial intern at EYE Weekly qualify him to be Ruckus’ head honcho. Aside from writing, editing and bossing people around, Carl spends ample time advocating for the environment, learning Italian and trying to keep up with those sassy west-end hipsters. Zalina interned this summer in Molokai, Hawaii.

Zalina Alvi (Associate Editor, Listings and Classifieds) is a recent graduate of York University with an HBA in English and communication studies and no firm job prospects. She is the former editor-in-chief of York’s community newspaper, Excalibur, and continues to visit to use their computers. With three internships at Outpost magazine, Canadian Immigrant magazine, and The Molokai Dispatch in Hawaii, she’s hoping to hold down steady employment one day. While she can’t decide between features, news, travel writing or arts reporting, she’s pretty sure she likes cats more than dogs. (zalina@ruckusmagazine.ca)

This summer, Colleen visited the Eiffel Tower (and the rest of Paris).

Colleen Hale-Hodgson (Associate Editor, Arts and Features) is a recent graduate of York University with an HBA majoring in professional writing and minoring in creative writing. She has worked as the arts editor for Excalibur and as a guidebook coordinator/designer for York University’s colleges. She loves all of the arts, but shares a special bond with music and film. Her favourite musician is Bob Dylan, poet is Arthur Rimbaud, movie is Rear Window and novel is Catch-22. She prefers dogs to cats. (colleen@ruckusmagazine.ca)

Tamara Grominsky (Copy Editor) is currently in her final year at York University where she is majoring in Professional Writing and English. Like the rest of her Ruckus friends, she has worked at Excalibur, first as a volunteer and then as the copy editor. Other stints include a writing internship at The Waterloo Chronicle and an editorial internship at WLU Press. When she is not editing, Tamara enjoys long walks on the beach, a strong strawberry daiquiri and a rousing board game.
