Theatre collective raises money for orphans in Ghana

Fly By Night Theatre (FBN) is a misleading name.
It’s true that founding members Ryan Singh and siblings Gordon and Michele Chan started the company as a one-time event to raise money for the Royal Seed Needy Home, an orphanage in Ofankor, Ghana. But now it has become something more – a sustainable theatre group that grows with every production.
Growing up, Gordon, Michele and Singh had always tossed around the idea of running their own theatre company. They came up with Fly By Night as a way of helping an orphanage that had affected Gordon while also cultivating their collective love of theatre. The result was 7 Stories, a play by Canada’s Morris Panych which ran on August 23 and 24, 2007.
During the production of 7 Stories, they roped in fellow Woodlands High School alumnus Ryan Lee to oversee the set construction. He became a council member and, shortly after, Maggie McCormick and Marisa Ship joined the group to make it what it is today.
FBN is a different kind of student theatre group for a number of reasons. Firstly, most of the council’s members did not study theatre. Although Ship is a graduate of the University of Toronto Mississauga’s renowned theatre acting program, Lee studied theatre production and McCormick did a double major in theatre and film, the three founding members all came from different educational backgrounds. Michele studied English, Singh was a history student, and Gordon took commerce, a subject that most thespians don’t even touch.
This diversity, however, has been a boon for the company. Each member’s strength becomes the group’s collective strength: Gordon’s ability to crunch numbers, Michele’s eloquent writing and Singh’s knowledge of producing and marketing. That said, responsibilities often overlap, causing the group to focus as one cohesive unit. It is as if they are six people mashed together to form one superhuman theatre person with multiple personalities.
The other thing that sets them apart is that FBN’s success is measured differently than other theatre groups. True, the group acknowledges the need for financial sustainability, but all of the profits go to the Royal Seed Needy Home. Since their first production two years ago, they have been in constant contact with the orphanage, sending them money and keeping up to date on each other’s developments.
“They even send us all their receipts,” beamed Gordon. 7 Stories was able to raise $1000 for the Home, and since then they’ve raised thousands more. The plan is to continue raising money until the Home is able to sustain itself.
And what happens after that? Another good deed.
Past FBN productions have included the The Long Weekend by Canadian Norm Foster, 4Play (a collection of four original works) and Better Living by Ship which recently played at Kensington’s Bread & Circus Theatre. They also sponsored Even Better Living.
This coming fall they will be producing 3some. But, in the meantime, check out their current production of Neil LaBute’s classic Autobahn collection at Theatre Passe Muraille from June 17 to 20 at 8 p.m. nightly. Autobahn is FBN’s first non-Mississauga based show and Ryan only “hopes to continue to grow within the GTA”.
