Exposing women through a lens
Toronto based queer artists their community, their relationships and their lives through photography

Rosalinda Graziano and Chelsey Lichtman, two queer Toronto artists, present All About Her: Versions of the Woman Exposed at the Robert Watson Gallery on 363 Sorauren Avenue since May 21 until June 7. These two very different photography collections strive, in Graziano’s words, to “portray people in their natural essence” and creatively expose the distinctive normalcy of the queer world.

Graziano, an OCAD graduate and an art director for the last twelve years presents a series of photos of her partner. Placed in order of significance as opposed to chronologically, the photographs lovingly depict the beauty the artist finds in her subject. Not only the warmth and comfort, but also the confusion and change of relationships emanate from Graziano’s documentations of a relationship over the years. With her photographs, she captures so strikingly what love songs attempt to write about - the lasting kind.

On the second floor of the gallery is Lichtman’s work, a York University women’s studies graduate who is very active in queer events throughout the city—including the popular Granny Boots at the Gladstone. Lichtman’s aim was to capture “people in vulnerable, intimate, and unexpected moments.” She accomplishes her goal beautifully—the images are compelling with something remarkable found in every aspect of every shot. Each piece is an intimate moment between the artist and subject, catching the unguarded reactions of many subjects who are performing artists themselves.
“I wanted to make what I want to see,” Lichtman explains, with Graziano adding that they wanted to celebrate their community, their relationships, and their lives.
Both exhibitions, while separate in some sense, deftly expose a community few outsiders often get to see. Looking forward, they hope to show the pieces throughout Toronto, with many other projects in the works. If the current exhibit is any indication, I can only anticipate great things from these two very talented Toronto artists.
